Former The Tonight Show host and current host of CNBC‘s Jay Leno’s Garage recently talked about Tesla, noting that he thinks the secret to CEO Elon Musk’s success is that “he was building the infrastructure as he was building the vehicle.”

Leno was referring to the fact that Tesla did not start out by simply creating an electric car — it created an electric car, along with an extensive network of Superchargers to power these said vehicles.

“Even today, a lot of the major manufacturers build an electric car, but, oh, where do you charge it?”, asked Leno, showcasing the defined upper hand Tesla has over veteran automakers trying to enter the electric vehicle (EV) industry.

Tesla also expanded its manufacturing capabilities as it expanded its catalog of offerings, developing massive factories like Gigafactory Berlin and Gigafactory Texas.

Tesla is poised to become the newest member of the S&P 500 index on Monday at its full market capitalization (adjusted for float), replacing the Apartment Investment and Management Co.

Tesla has thrived in 2020, with share prices rocketing up over 700% Year-To-Date. In fact, Tesla’s stock hit another all-time high of $695 USD per share just shy of its inclusion into the S&P 500.

Tesla has undoubtedly domineered the EV market and the U.S. stock exchanges this year, and Jay Leno believes Tesla will be able to maintain this dominance as its cars outshine anything else the auto industry (European manufacturers included) have to offer at this time.
