Tesla Bans Drone Flights Over Gigafactory Berlin

Tesla has banned drone flights over its Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg site, as pointed out on Monday by drone videography account @WolfpackBerlin.

The account says that Tesla specifically informed them that flights over the plant are forbidden, and will only be allowed once per quarter down the line.

The practice has been common from groups like WolfpackBerlin and Tobias Lindh since Tesla began constructing the Grünheide, Germany plant, showing up-close shots of new developments at the site as it went from being built to producing cars.

Lindh corroborated what WorldpackBerlin said, noting drone flights “are not allowed on every weekend anymore.” However, Lindh says he will “continue my weekly time-lapse videos from outside and think about what other kind of videos I can make about #GigaBerlin.”

The drone pilot added he hopes to be able to film again when phase 2 of Giga Berlin begins. As for why the drone flights have been banned? Lindh replied, “safety” when someone asked.

Drone pilots can still film Giga Berlin from beyond the limits of Tesla’s grounds, but they cannot physically enter the airspace above the factory.

WolfpackBerlin spotted Tesla’s Model Y in the abyss blue multicoat at Giga Berlin just a few weeks ago.

Tesla reached a production goal of 3,000 Model Y builds per week at Giga Berlin in December, after the plant only began substantial production last summer.

Drones are still able to be used at Tesla’s U.S. Gigafactories, and one user in the Twitter thread points out that airspace isn’t controlled by property owners in the automaker’s headquartering country.

Tesla’s sales in Germany jumped 912 percent year over year in January, and the company is still ramping up production at the Grünheide plant.
