Tesla Reportedly Pausing Battery Cell Plans at Giga Berlin Until 2024: Report
Tesla is reportedly delaying its full battery cell production plans at Giga Berlin, according to unnamed sources familiar with the matter, speaking to the German publication, Handelsblatt.
Currently, Tesla is only conducting research on electrodes at Giga Berlin, although it eventually plans to produce entire electric vehicle (EV) batteries at the facility. Instead, the automaker will move machines responsible for winding, assembling and formatting the cells to Giga Texas, according to “experts” close to Tesla.
Before enacting plans to build a battery cell plant at the Grünheide facility, Tesla reportedly still needs to lock down its electrode dry coating process. Five experts familiar with the process reported that tests have been successful, but that the implementation of the technique at high volumes is still behind where it needs to be.
The reportedly delay at Giga Berlin for this planned battery cell plant is said to pause until 2024.

The news comes about a month after Grünheide Mayor Arne Cristiani announced that the expansion of Giga Texas for the battery plant was on track. A separate report held that the factory was accelerating the battery cell building process.
Tesla has also said that the ramp up process for its Model Y SUV has gone smoothly, adding that the automaker had reached a production capacity of 1,000 cars produced per week.
Additionally, Tesla is looking to build a freight station at Giga Berlin, including both an inbound and an outbound railway station.
