Tesla Shanghai Factory to Hit 300,000 Cars Produced from Jan-Sept: Report
Tesla is set to announce its Q3 production and earnings at the end of September, and according to a new report from Reuters, the company’s Shanghai Gigafactory is firing on all cylinders.
Unnamed sources tell Reuters despite the global semiconductor shortage, Tesla’s Giga Shanghai factory is expected to produce 300,000 vehicles, for the January to September period, assisted by the end of Q3 rush.
Giga Shanghai produces Tesla’s Model 3 electric sedan and Model Y compact crossover SUV, selling cars locally in China, but also acting as a major export hub to markets in Europe and the Asia Pacific region.
China Passenger Car Association data noted about 240,000 vehicles were made at Giga Shanghai in the first eight months of 2021, which includes vehicles destined for export. Tesla did not comment on these numbers.
Reuters says back in August, an unnamed official in the Giga Shanghai factory area said the latter was expected to make 450,000 cars this year, including 66,100 vehicles for export. During the same month, Tesla was hiring for multiple positions at Giga Shanghai.
During Tesla’s Q2 earnings report, the company noted the Installed Annual Capacity at Giga Shanghai was pegged at over 450,000 vehicles, consisting of Model 3 and Model Y.
Combining Giga Shanghai with Tesla’s Fremont factory in California, Tesla told investors its production capacity was now beyond 1.05 million cars per year. With Giga Berlin and Giga Texas expected to come online later this year and in early 2022, Tesla’s production capacity will increase even further.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk emphasized the company’s growth and output was constrained during its Q2 earnings call, due to the ongoing global chip shortage. Earlier this week, Musk said he believes the semiconductor shortage is “short term” and should resolve itself in 2022.
