Tesla Produces 100 Millionth 4680 Battery Cell, Optimus Celebrates
Tesla announced it has produced its 100 millionth 4680 battery cell across all factories, marking a major milestone in its push to advance electric vehicle technology.
The company shared a photo of its Optimus robot on Saturday holding a 4680 cell with the inscription “100,000,000.” Go Optimus!
The 4680 battery cell, first introduced during Tesla’s Battery Day in 2020, represents a significant step forward in improving battery efficiency, reducing costs, and enhancing performance. Named for its dimensions (46mm in diameter and 80mm in height), the cell features a tabless design that allows for higher energy density and better thermal management compared to previous models.
Tesla has ramped up production of the 4680 cells at its Gigafactory Texas, with additional expansions underway in Nevada. The company aims to reduce battery costs by over 50% through innovations in manufacturing and materials.
What’s remarkable is that Tesla announced it had produced 50 million 4680 battery cells back in June. The team has doubled the production of its 4680 cells in just three months. Wow.
Key 4680 battery cell milestones include:
- 1 Millionth Cell Production: Achieved in January 2022.
- 10 Millionth Cell Production: Reached in June 2023.
- 20 Millionth Cell Production: Announced in October 2023.
- 50 Millionth Cell Production: Celebrated in June 2024.
- 100 Millionth Cell Production: Celebrated in September 2024
Will we see 200 million in three months or more?
The 4680 cells have been integrated into limited production models, such as some versions of the Model Y from Texas, and are primarily used in Tesla’s Cybertruck.
