Tesla Picking from Two Sites for Mexican Factory, Says President
The President of Mexico says two locations may be in the running for Tesla’s upcoming factory.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that Tesla is considering plants in either Nuevo Leon or Hidalgo in a statement on Wednesday, according to Reuters.
Although Tesla hasn’t commented, President Lopez Obrador called both Mexican states potential options for the new plant when asked about plans for the factory.
The news comes just days after Mexican foreign affairs minister Marcelo Ebrard said the announcement of a Tesla plant in Mexico was “very close.” It also comes after Presidential spokesperson Jesus Ramirez said the automaker was considering an assembly plant near a Mexico City airport which would be used by Tesla as an export hub.
A report from October suggested that Tesla CEO Elon Musk was considering an investment into Nuevo Leon following a visit with officials in the state.
Last July, Tesla suppliers also gained an exclusive lane at the U.S.-Mexico border checkpoint.
In December, several outlets and sources reported that Tesla could be announcing a Mexico Gigafactory within the month.
Just weeks ago, Mexico’s Deputy Secretary of Economic Development Emmanuel Loo recently stated that the government hadn’t yet come to a deal with the automaker.
