Tesla Suppliers Get Exclusive Lane at U.S.-Mexico Border Checkpoint

Tesla now has an exclusive lane to cross the Mexico-U.S. border at the Colombia Solidarity checkpoint, made to help suppliers speed up deliveries, as reported by Bloomberg.

The lane includes a green, highway-styled Tesla sign next to several other lanes at the checkpoint near Laredo, Texas.

The Economy Minister for the state Nuevo Leon Ivan Rivas said the action was taken to streamline deliveries to Tesla.

In an interview, Rivas said, “It was a simple incentive.” Rivas continued, “What we want is a crossing that’s much more expedited and efficient. And maybe there will be a lane for other companies in the future like there is for Tesla.”

About 10 miles of the border is covered by Nuevo Leon, though the Colombia Solidarity checkpoint is less popular than many others.

The average wait time at the site for commercial trucks is around 20 minutes, and the state is currently expanding the checkpoint from six lanes to eight.

Nuevo Leon has at least six Tesla suppliers located within the state, and Rivas expects 5-7 percent of investments into the state to come from the electric vehicle (EV) industry.

Reports in June showed that Tesla could be considering building Gigafactories in Mexico and Canada, as suggested by CEO Elon Musk in a companywide meeting.
