The prospect of Tesla setting up a plant in Mexico is apparently coming soon, says the country’s foreign affairs minister.

According to Bloomberg, foreign affairs minister Marcelo Ebrard said a Tesla announcement is “very close” but would not elaborate. Tesla is said to be setting up a plant in Mexico and has been shown numerous potential locations.

“What I would think is that we’re very close to have this announcement by Tesla, but I don’t have an exact date yet,” said Ebrard. “They will make their announcement. We can’t announce it,” he added.

Earlier this week, it was similarly reported Tesla was pondering an assembly plant near a Mexico City airport, according to a presidential spokesman. The new plant would be used as an export hub for the electric automaker. Today’s story seemingly corroborates earlier reports.

Tesla building a manufacturing facility in Mexico would allow the company to expand its production beyond the U.S., Europe and China. CEO Elon Musk said the company would be announcing the location of its next Gigafactory soon.

Back on January 26, a Mexican official in Nuevo León told Nikkei the nation had yet to strike a deal with Tesla yet. Nuevo Leon is located very close to the U.S. border, near Texas, which is home to Tesla’s headquarters and its Gigafactory in Austin.
