As Tesla continues to bolster its presence in the small auto market of Taiwan, the automaker is already topping sales charts with the recent introduction of its Model Y compact crossover SUV.

Tesla’s Model Y SUV outsold the gasoline engine-based Toyota RAV4 and other key competitors in Taiwan in December, selling a total of 3,598 units in the country during the month, according to data shared by @Buzzyal on Thursday.

The Toyota RAV4 was the second-best-selling vehicle in the market with 1,162 units sold, outpacing third- and fourth-place winners the Mazda CX-5 and the Lexus ES which sold 1,135 and 509 units in the same month, respectively.

The Tesla Model 3 was the fifth-best-selling vehicle in the market with 475 units delivered.

Tesla only began delivering the Model Y in Taiwan about a month ago, after the automaker launched reservations for the SUV in September. The first Model Y unit was spotted in Taiwan in October, ahead of the company’s planned deliveries in December.

The Taiwanese auto market receives its Model Y units from Tesla’s Gigafactory in Grünheide, Germany, while its Model 3 units come from the automaker’s Fremont, California Gigafactory.

In 2022, Tesla opened 58 Superchargers across Taiwan to bring the total number of chargers up to 85.

In November, Tesla stopped accepting new Model 3 orders in Taiwan, instead directing prospective customers toward inventory options.
