Tesla’s Model S Plaid has added yet another notch to its belt this week, breaking the lap record for all vehicles — electric or otherwise — at the Willow Springs Raceway in Rosamond, California (via InsideEVs).

The Model S Plaid, modified by Unplugged Performance, posted a lap time of 1:13.51. It handily toppled the previous record of 1:16.45, which was set by a modified Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport. Unplugged’s modified Model S Plaid also holds the electric vehicle (EV) lap record at Laguna Seca.

Unplugged Performance retrofitted the Model S Plaid in question with several performance upgrades, including a new suspension setup, an aero kit, and carbon ceramic brakes. InsideEVs estimated the total cost of all the upgrades at over $100,000.

As much of a beast as Unplugged’s Model S Plaid is, the high-performance EV doesn’t even need any modifications to impress. Even stock, Tesla’s Model S Plaid is one of the fastest cars available across all propulsion systems, with a 0-60 mph time of just 1.99 seconds and an output of 1,100 horsepower.

For a time, a completely stock Model S Plaid held the record for the fastest production EV to go around Germany’s Nürburgring raceway, before it was dethroned by a Porsche Taycan Turbo S. Earlier this year, the Model S Plaid also set a new EV lap record at the Virginia International Raceway.

The Model S Plaid and Model X Plaid have started making their way to Europe, with Tesla delivering the first units this week. Automotive YouTube channel Autogefühl recently published its review of the 2023 Model S Plaid on the German Autobahn.
