Tesla’s store often keeps useful products and accessories for on hand for its vehicle owners, and one cargo shelf retrofit is now being installed at some service centers.

A new Tesla Model Y Performance cargo shelf retrofit has been spotted, as installed by a service center (via Reddit).

The parts were ordered for $200 using the mobile app, and installation at the Tesla service center was free. The modification features hardware including the left- and right-hand C-pillar upper trims, and the parcel shelf itself.

Delivery took about three weeks and the buyer followed up by scheduling an appointment.

According to the buyer, it not only keeps cargo hidden, but also decreased cabin noise and ear pressure, perhaps due to the covering up of the rear wheel wells. The buyer also notes that drivers wanting to keep their old trim must notify service center employees, as the parts were reportedly thrown away after replacement.

The three parts ordered by Tesla were:

  • C PILLAR UPPER TRIM, ASY, RIGHT HAND(1661181-00-A)
  • END ITEM, PARCEL SHELF(1641293-97-B)
  • C PILLAR UPPER TRIM, ASY, LEFT HAND(1622252-98-B)

Some owners on the TMC forums said installation was not free, but did cost around $96 USD.

The cargo cover is thought to help reduce theft, blocking outside passersby from seeing what’s inside of the Model Y’s trunk area.

Tesla began offering the cargo cover add-on in Germany and China earlier this year, and one was also spotted at Giga Texas sporting a similar parcel shelf option.
