Tesla Leads Soaring EV Adoption in Bexar County, Texas
Tesla was way ahead of the pack in Bexar County, Texas, which saw electric vehicle (EV) sales jump 184% through July of this year as compared to the same period last year — reports San Antonio Express-News.
Bexar County saw the highest year-over-year increase in EV sales volume across Texas, up to 3,815 units. The state is home to both Tesla’s headquarters and CEO Elon Musk.
Tesla accounted for a whopping 3,338 of the 3,815 EVs sold in Bexar County during the past year, up to July 2022. Ford followed far behind in second place, with just 192 EVs sold in the period.
Nearly 9 in 10 EVs sold in Bexar County through July were manufactured by Tesla. The information comes from data on title transactions, which are an indicator of sale trends, from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
EVs only represent 0.2% of all registered vehicles in Texas. However, the Texas DMV said in a report earlier this year that EV uptake is on the rise. Where vehicle registrations across all fuel types rose only 5% between fiscal years 2020 and 2021, EV registrations surged 66% during the same period.
Tesla’s Model Y was the best-selling EV in the U.S. for the entirety of 2021. What’s more, Tesla continues to dominate EV sales and luxury car sales across the U.S. this year.
