Tesla’s Gigafactory Berlin Has Giga Castings Everywhere [VIDEO]

Tesla’s Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg has been busy building car bodies, as evidenced in a recent video showing drone footage of the Grünheide site.

A video shared by drone videographer and Tesla enthusiast Tobias Lindh on Monday shows Giga castings everywhere at the factory.

In the video’s description, Lindh writes, “There are a lot of castings all over the site. If castings were the limiting factor before, they are not the limiting factor anymore.

The 28-minute drone video shows sweeping shots from outside the Gigafactory with several of the automaker’s castings lying in parking lots around the factory’s perimeter.

At Tesla’s recent 2022 annual shareholders meeting, Elon Musk emphasized the simplification of the company’s vehicle structures, comparing the Model 3 to Model Y made at Giga Texas.

Tesla is able to go from 171 pieces of metal down to two, resulting in over 1,600 fewer welds. The result, according to Musk, is a lighter and stiffer car, with better handling, noise vibration and harshness, sealing against water and just overall “better in every way.”

For now, it’s unclear if Model Y vehicles produced in Germany are using two single-piece castings yet for both front and back.

The news comes after Tesla produced its first Model Y with a 4680 battery cell, and as the automaker continues to ramp up production at the site.

Reports are showing that Tesla’s Model 3 and Y exports to Europe in Q3 are also expected to be massive, with a series of ships scheduled to bring the EVs to Europe.

Last month, a report showed that Tesla’s Giga Berlin was set to build around 3,000 Model Y bodies per week by October.

The automaker has also been performing a production upgrade at Giga Berlin, set to increase the automaker’s production capacity twofold.
