Tesla Nears 3 Million Cars Delivered, Led by Model Y

Tesla has delivered almost three million electric vehicles (EVs) since making its debut in the global automotive landscape back in 2012 — reports CleanTechnica.

According to the publication’s calculations, the global EV leader has sold a whopping 2,899,877 all-electric cars as of the end of the second quarter of 2022. Tesla delivered its first car in the third quarter of 2012, marking exactly 10 years since the company came on the scene.

Given Tesla’s sales numbers in recent quarters, the company will likely deliver its 3,000,000th vehicle sometime in Q3. The momentous delivery could be later this month or in August.

Considering Tesla’s propensity for making the news and the magnitude of the achievement, the company will probably find a way to celebrate its 3,000,000th delivery. Tesla may also commemorate completing a decade of producing and delivering vehicles around the same time.

CleanTechnica‘s quarterly analysis of Tesla sales by model revealed that Model Y deliveries are growing at an unprecedented rate.

It may still be a while before the Model Y overtakes the Model 3, though, as the latter has been on the market for far longer and ranks higher in overall unit sales.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has even bigger ambitions for the Model Y, though. Last fall, Musk said the Model Y should eventually become the “best selling vehicle of any kind globally.”

Earlier this month, Tesla reported 254,695 deliveries for Q2. As a result of factory closures in China and supply bottlenecks across the globe, Tesla was unable to achieve higher delivery numbers than in the preceding quarter. Even so, June turned out to be the highest production month in Tesla’s 10-year history.

Tesla has recorded sales of 564,743 EVs for the first half of the year. With production ramping back up at its Gigafactories across the world and supply shortages easing, the EV maker is on track to one-up its delivery count for last year with well over a million units in 2022.

Later this week on Wednesday, Tesla will announce its Q2 earnings.
