Currently, Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta systems use camera-based technology, rather than using radar and lidar, like some automakers are choosing to do.
Australia and New Zealand just became the most recent countries to add camera-only Autopilot functionality last month.
While Tesla launched camera-based FSD and Autopilot in the U.S. last summer, the automaker officially kicked radar out for good in February, when it launched camera-based Autopilot for its Model S and X units.
A report in January showed that Samsung and LG were competing for Tesla’s camera module orders, though it’s not clear if the automaker is also talking to other suppliers.
