Tesla to Increase Speed Limit of Camera-Based Autopilot: ‘Coming Soon’ Says Musk

Tesla recently dropped radar sensors in favor of camera-based sensors in its Model S and X units, officially marking the final move away from radar sensors.

Pure Vision Autopilot, which is Tesla’s camera-only version of the driver assistance feature, has a current speed limit of 80 mph (128 kph) max.

Telsa owner @BLKMDL3 asked Elon Musk on Sunday when Autopilot would be allowed to go faster than the current 80 mph max speed limit.

Elon Musk said an update will be “coming soon”, in response to the question of whether limits increasing to 85 mph or 90 mph would be possible.

In the initial post, user @BLKMDL3 also added that “us roadtrippers will thank you” once the max speed limit is increased.

Tesla shared its 2022.12.1 software update over the weekend, complete with new abilities to customize the bottom bar and activate child locks for just one or both rear doors. This version also expands Disney+ to Canada.

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta is set to gain a full North American release later this year, stated Musk at the company’s Cyber Rodeo event at Giga Texas.

Tesla also held its Cyber Rodeo event last week, officially opening the automaker’s new Gigafactory Texas for production and deliveries.

At the event, Musk also said Tesla could get into mining and refining its own lithium if costs remain as high as they are now.

Musk also mentioned that “futuristic,” dedicated robotaxis are already in the works for Tesla.
