After a mesmerizing drone light show, Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to the stage and proceeded to drop essential nuggets of information about the new factory — it is as big as 3 Pentagons and can fit a whopping 194 billion hamsters, for example.
Tesla delivered the first Texas-made Model Y cars to customers at Thursday’s event, officially kicking off operations at Gigafactory Austin. While on stage, Musk unveiled the latest prototype of the company’s all-electric Cybertruck, slated to start production at Giga Texas next year.
Musk also revealed plans for a dedicated, “futuristic” robotaxi from the electric vehicle (EV) maker, and promised a full North American release of the company’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta software this year.
We also got an update on Optimus — Tesla’s humanoid robot — from the company’s CEO, who said the project should hopefully begin production in 2023. The first Optimus robots will work at Tesla’s own factories, likely starting with Giga Texas where they are expected to be manufactured.
