2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 Analyzed by Sandy Munro Engineers [VIDEO]
While “Teardown Titan” Sandy Munro focuses his efforts on tearing down the Tesla Model S Plaid one component at a time, his associates at Munro Live pivoted to the Hyundai IONIQ 5 for a recent video.
Munro shared a quick review of the IONIQ 5 last month, and his team now walks us through the IONIQ 5’s design and architecture in this new video.
With the IONIQ 5 lifted up on a hoist, the team talks us through each of the components we can see, along with some of the design decisions Hyundai made for the IONIQ 5 and how the all-electric crossover is different as compared to previous cars from the company and its sub-brand, Kia.
In particular, the automotive experts talk about the design and composition of the IONIQ 5’s front cradle, suspension, rear cradle, and electric drive module (EDM).
Several of Hyundai’s design decisions, including the uniform underbody shields and the active grille shutters in the front, were informed by the goal of making the IONIQ 5 as aerodynamic as possible to improve speeds.
According to the teardown experts, the IONIQ 5’s battery is also better protected from any road hazards you might drive over as compared to older offerings from Hyundai and Kia.
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 starts at $40,925 in the U.S. and $44,999 in Canada.
