2021 Tesla Model X Long Range Upgrades Detailed in EPA Filing

Following Tesla’s “Meet Your Model X” video for owners of the 2021 Model X refresh, a federal filing shows some of the changes the company is looking to make for its 2021 model.

The refreshed version of Tesla’s Model X Long Range (LR) is lighter than the 2020 model, according to an application submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in September (via @tempermanant).

The application details a number of updates to the model, including performance boosts making it more efficient overall.

Compared with Tesla’s EPA application last year for the 2020 Model X LR, the 2021 Model X LR will have a 14 percent reduction in battery weight, as well as increases to the vehicle’s performance.

In addition to a lower overall weight, the application details a 13 percent increase in battery-specific energy, with overall power increasing more than 30 percent due to the vehicle’s AC magnetic motors in the front and rear.

The 2021 Model X Long Range will also see a 30% increase in power, plus include AC magnetic motors for both the front and rear, while curb weight reduced by 4%.

The U.S. EPA letter dated September 10, 2021, was sent to Tristan Rojeck, Vehicle Programs and Compliance Division, from Suraj Nagaraj, Tesla Director of Vehicle Homologation.

Earlier this week, a drone flyover spotted Tesla’s Fremont Factory with a stockpile of Model S and Model X units set to begin delivering to customers.

Still, some new Tesla Model X orders are seeing delivery wait times as far as October 2022, so new customers should be prepared to wait nearly a year for their Model X units.
