Tesla Increases Price of Solar Roof by at Least 45%, ‘Roof Complexity’ Now a Factor

Tesla’s Solar Roof backlog shows how high demand the company’s technology currently is, with anew update to its pricing model significantly increasing the price of the Solar Roof.

In a recent update to its Solar Roof order configurator, Tesla has increased the price of its Solar Roof significantly, according to electrek. The news comes following the launch of Tesla’s version 3 Solar Roof, which also included a price decrease due to faster installs and optimization.

Currently, a 3,947 square-foot roof with a 12,3 kW solar roof costs between $79,938 and $100,621, while the same roof last summer would have only cost $54,966 prior to incentives. That’s a price increase of at least 45%.

This increase in price also came with the addition of a “roof complexity” category to Tesla’s website, which the company says its employees and installers will confirm upon ordering the Solar Roof.

On its website, Tesla said, “Roof complexity is determined by the pitch, number of joints, chimneys, and other features on your roof. Complex roofs take more time and material to install than simple roofs, which increases the total system cost. Once you place an order, our design team will use remote imagery to confirm your roof complexity and system fit.”

Earlier this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed that Tesla’s long-anticipated Solar Roof would be arriving in Canada later this year.
