Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently added ‘Bitcoin‘ to his Twitter bio, and the internet devolved into a frenzy as the price of Bitcoin surged.
On Monday, while being interviewed on Clubhouse, Musk told the host he is a “supporter of Bitcoin,” adding that he was fed a “slice of Bitcoin cake” in 2013 (via Yahoo Finance). He also shared that “Bitcoin is a good thing,” claiming that the world was coming closer to a more mainstream adoption of the popular cryptocurrency.
Musk said, “Bitcoin is really on the verge of getting broad acceptance.” Later, he weighed in on the meme cryptocurrency, Dogecoin, which also saw major spikes in price last week, saying the “most ironic outcome would be that Dogecoin becomes the currency of the earth in the future.”
Although Musk does state his Dogecoin comments are just meant to be jokes, his mentions of the meme currency are typically followed by surges in price. In 2020, Musk’s Twitter account was also hacked as part of an internet-wide Bitcoin scam. Despite this, Musk hasn’t been shy about his support for Bitcoin in the months since.
At the time of writing, Bitcoin shares are trading for $33,398.65 USD (+1.38%), down from the $38,000 it reached following Musk’s recent bio edit.
