Giga Berlin Hits 2 Years of 100% Wastewater Recycling

Tesla Giga Berlin process wastewater recycling milestone

Giga Berlin has completed two years of recycling 100% of its process wastewater, with Tesla saying the factory has put 465 million liters back into production over that period.

Tesla Manufacturing shared the milestone on November 5 through its @gigafactories account. The update puts a cumulative figure on the water being reused at the German factory, rather than sent away after its first pass through production.

The latest figure builds on the plant’s one-year milestone last November, when factory head André Thierig said no process wastewater had been discharged into the public sewer for a full year. At the time, Tesla credited its on-site treatment system with recycling all of that industrial process water.

The distinction matters here: process wastewater comes from manufacturing. Tesla’s new post does not say the entire factory operates without fresh water, or that every type of wastewater generated on site is already recycled.

Water remains a sensitive issue for the Grünheide site, which sits partly in a drinking water protection area. Recycling production water is therefore relevant beyond the factory floor, particularly as Tesla sets out its next expansion plans.

Those plans include a second production hall covering about 536,000 square meters and an expanded wastewater treatment setup. The proposed buildout also includes an additional water loop intended to eventually handle sanitary wastewater, a separate stream from the process water covered by today’s milestone.

Tesla has not broken down the 465 million liters by production stage or provided a new per-vehicle water consumption figure in this update. For now, the concrete change is another year of continuous process-water recycling, with the total reused volume reaching 465 million liters.
