Falcon 9 Launches 21 SDA Satellites After Monday’s Abort

A Falcon 9 lifted off from California at 12:39 a.m. PT on Saturday with 21 Space Development Agency satellites, five days after the same mission was stopped by an auto abort in the final second of its countdown.
The rocket flew from Space Launch Complex 4 East at Vandenberg Space Force Base. SpaceX says it delivered all 21 data transport satellites to low-Earth orbit, completing the fourth orbital plane of the SDA’s network.

This attempt follows the October 5 scrub, when Falcon 9’s computers halted the countdown just before T-0. SpaceX said at the time that the rocket and payload were healthy, and it never said what triggered the abort.
The first stage booster was on its sixth flight. It had already flown NROL-179, an earlier SDA mission called SDA-T1TL-E, and three Starlink missions. After stage separation, it came back to Landing Zone 4 (LZ-4) at Vandenberg.
The satellites are part of the SDA’s Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture. SpaceX describes it as a mesh network of satellites linked by lasers in low-Earth orbit, built to carry military tactical communications and to warn of and track missiles.
Saturday’s flight was the fourth of nine Tranche 1 missions Falcon 9 is set to fly for the agency. SpaceX also warned that people in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura counties may have heard sonic booms during the launch.
SpaceX hasn’t said when the fifth Tranche 1 mission will fly, and it hasn’t confirmed that the satellites are healthy and talking to the ground after deployment. That usually comes from the SDA itself.
After a week of waiting, Vandenberg locals got their night launch, and a booster with six flights behind it is back on the pad for another one.
