Tesla Energy Extends Backup to New Model 3 and Model Y With 2+ Days of Power
![]()
Tesla Energy has expanded Powershare Home Backup to new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles paired with Powerwall 3, allowing owners to extend their home backup by more than two days using the battery parked in their driveway. It is the first time the feature has reached Tesla’s two highest-volume vehicles.
Tesla Energy announced the expansion today alongside a short video showing the feature in action. All new Model 3 and Model Y ordered in the U.S. and Puerto Rico after October 1, 2026 ship with hardware capable of sending power from the vehicle back into the home. Tesla’s fine print ties eligibility to the order date rather than the build date, which clears up early confusion about which cars qualify. Tesla estimates the vehicle can add more than two days of backup for a typical American household, based on average daily energy use of 30 kWh.
The system requires Powerwall 3 paired with either a Universal Wall Connector or Wall Connector 3 and a bidirectional inverter. Until now, Powershare Home Backup was exclusive to the Cybertruck, which introduced the feature with its onboard outlets and vehicle-to-home equipment.
Some Cybertruck Powershare features are not included. Powershare Grid Support, which allows vehicles to send power to the grid during periods of peak demand, remains limited to Cybertruck in select markets. Owners of the new sedans and SUVs who want portable power can still connect tools and other devices to the charge port using the Tesla Outlet Adapter, a form of vehicle-to-load tech that recently reached the Model 3 in Korea.
The expansion essentially gives Powerwall 3 owners another large battery to draw from during an outage, while adding another use for the Model 3 and Model Y beyond transportation. With the right home hardware installed, the car effectively becomes the biggest battery in the house.
