Tesla’s German Sales Jump 268% as Model Y Tops France

Tesla registrations in Germany shot up 268.7 percent in September to 12,552 vehicles, and over in France the Model Y finished the month as the best-selling car of any kind with 8,183 registrations, according to official data released Monday.
The September press release from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) shows Tesla at 12,552 new registrations, up 268.7 percent from the same month last year and good for a 4.9 percent share of all new registrations in the country. That works out to roughly 14.2 percent of the 88,599 battery-electric vehicles registered in Germany in September, a big jump from 4.4 percent in August.
Some context on that 268.7 percent figure: Tesla sales-data tracker Roland Pircher noted the year-over-year jump is real but flattering, since last September was a weak base month and more of the quarter’s deliveries were concentrated into September than usual. His read is that the trend is “good and strong,” but Tesla is roughly back to the sales levels it had three to four years ago. He also noted those older figures had their own distortions, as Germany had EV incentives in place then and many cars bought in Germany were soon exported to neighboring countries.
France was just as strong for the Model Y, which beat out the Peugeot 208 for the top spot overall with 8,183 registrations to the Peugeot’s 7,860, a margin of 323 cars. Those numbers come from monthly rankings based on official AAA Data and PFA figures reported by French auto media. Tesla brand registrations in France were up 61.9 percent year over year.
Both results add to what’s been a solid stretch in Europe for Tesla. The company recently passed 100,000 vehicles on the road in Denmark, and the Czech Republic approved FSD Supervised, giving Tesla another European market for its driver-assistance tech. It’s picking up wins outside Europe as well, with the Model 3 becoming Singapore’s best-selling sedan in August.
With the fourth quarter now underway and Tesla’s usual end-of-year delivery push ahead, the company has plenty of momentum to work with. We’ll know more once October registration data comes out and shows whether Germany and France were a one-month spike or the start of something bigger.
