Tesla FSD visualizes extra roadside space for safety.
Tesla said on September 8, 2026, that Full Self-Driving Supervised is built to leave extra space for pedestrians, cyclists, roadside workers, and cars parked along the curb, calling the lateral offset a safety margin most human drivers rarely hold as consistently.
“A little bit of offset creates extra margin if something unexpected happens, and can make a big difference when it comes to safety,” the company wrote. Tesla framed the behavior as intentional: FSD aims to give vulnerable road users and parked cars room so a sudden door swing, a step off the curb, or a swerve has somewhere to go.
The post did not name a software build or a hardware suite. Hardware 4 owners have been receiving FSD Supervised v14.3.9 after Tesla AI began that rollout, while Hardware 3 owners remain on FSD Supervised v14.1 Lite through the unified 2026.21.6 package, and both stacks stay supervised rather than unsupervised Robotaxi software.
The roadside-offset pitch lands alongside other recent FSD behavior talk, from pothole avoidance still listed as upcoming to Slovenia’s approval as a sixth EU market for FSD Supervised. Owners watching the v14 Lite Model S and Model X tip will hear the same theme: Tesla is selling FSD on how it shares the lane, not only on how far it drives without an intervention.
Tesla did not say how large the offset is in meters or whether the behavior changed in a specific point release. What it did say is that the stack is meant to hold a buffer most drivers skip, and that the company thinks that buffer matters when the unexpected shows up at the roadside.
