Elon Musk said Tesla Full Self-Driving will soon be able to avoid potholes, answering a Tesla owner on August 31 who wrote that they just wanted their car to steer around holes in the road.

Musk answered with two words on August 31: “Coming soon.” He did not name a software build, a hardware suite, or a date. Hardware 4 owners are on FSD Supervised v14.3.7 and Hardware 3 owners are on FSD Supervised v14.1 Lite through Tesla’s unified 2026.21.6 package, and pothole avoidance is still listed as upcoming on those notes, not as a live feature.

Tesla put “Add pothole avoidance” under Upcoming Improvements when FSD v14.3 launched in April with update 2026.2.9.6, and the same line is still on the v14.3.7 notes that went out August 1. The v14.3 vision encoder Tesla described then was meant to strengthen 3D geometry understanding, which is the kind of depth work potholes need, plus a rewritten AI compiler Tesla said cut reaction time by 20 percent.

This is not the first time Musk has promised the move. In August 2020 he said Tesla was labeling bumps and potholes so the car could slow down or steer around them when it was safe. Drivers still have to supervise FSD, including on a Model Y, because the current stack will still drive through holes the cameras do not treat as objects.

Musk did not say whether the first version will nudge the car inside the lane, brake, or wait for a later unsupervised Robotaxi build. The confirmation on the table is that Tesla still intends to ship pothole avoidance, and that he is calling it soon.
