Tesla FSD Amazes WSJ Critic After Two-Hour Model Y Drive

Self‑driving car navigates a dim parking lot with a blue path beam, multiple cars in adjacent lanes, and pedestrians in the distance; title reads'Self-Driving Standard Parking Lot'.Wall Street Journal automotive critic Dan Neil says Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) left him “bewitched” after about two hours in a Model Y, describing the software as “amazing” even while admitting he is still a sample of one with limited evidence.

“Still, I know good driving when I see it,” Neil wrote in the WSJ review. “Mile by mile, the FSD started to earn my confidence.” He singled out how the system held its position in rush-hour interstate traffic, from stopping and following distances to lane centering and the smooth gradients of acceleration, steering, and braking.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk amplified the moment on X, posting: “Try Tesla self-driving. Feels like magic.”

FSD (Supervised) remains a driver-assistance system, so the human still has to stay attentive and ready to take over. On the current wide rollout, Hardware 4 cars are getting FSD (Supervised) v14.3.7 while Hardware 3 owners are on FSD (Supervised) v14.1 Lite through Tesla’s unified 2026.21.6 software package, which Tesla North previously covered as Tesla expanded the FSD v14 branch to both computer generations. Tesla has also been pushing Supervised FSD farther overseas, including a recent South Korea mileage milestone.

Neil’s write-up stands out because mainstream reviews have often been cooler on the feature, and the WSJ piece frames today’s HW3 and HW4 software as already persuasive in everyday traffic even as Tesla keeps working toward unsupervised robotaxi service with vehicles like the Cybercab. For owners who have not tried it yet, Musk’s message was blunt: try it yourself.
