American Airlines to Equip Over 500 Aircraft With SpaceX Starlink Wi-Fi

American Airlines is upgrading its inflight internet by bringing SpaceX Starlink Wi-Fi to more than 500 of its narrowbody planes.

The major upgrade is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027. The airline plans to install the high-speed satellite service across its Airbus fleet, including its upcoming A321XLR and A321neo aircraft deliveries.

Starlink utilizes a network of thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit to offer high-speed, low-latency internet. The technology can deliver up to 1 Gbps of connectivity per antenna to each aircraft, meaning passengers can experience internet speeds similar to what they have at home. This will allow travellers to stream video, play online games, participate in live video meetings, and browse social media without encountering the lag typical of older inflight Wi-Fi networks.

According to Heather Garboden, the airline’s Chief Customer Officer, the partnership is part of an ongoing effort to keep passengers comfortably connected. Garboden noted that the high-speed service ensures travellers can work, stream, or load pages consistently throughout domestic and short-haul international flights without needing to download documents ahead of time.

Jason Fritch, Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales at SpaceX, highlighted that the satellite terminal provides gate-to-gate connectivity, creating a smoother experience for both airline passengers and flight crews.
