Tesla is aggressively expanding its footprint in Germany with a fresh $250 million investment dedicated to its battery manufacturing facility in Grünheide.
Giga Berlin director André Thierig confirmed the capital injection on Tuesday, noting that the funds are specifically earmarked to accelerate the production of 4680 battery cells. This strategic move is expected to generate over 1,500 new jobs at the site, offering a substantial boost to the local economy during a period of broader industrial uncertainty in Germany.
The primary objective of this investment is to establish an annual production capacity of 18GWh. This output is sufficient to power between 225,000 and 300,000 Model Y vehicles each year. By localising the manufacturing of these advanced cells, Tesla aims to shorten its supply chain and significantly decrease its reliance on outside battery suppliers for cars built in Europe.
This development follows a major milestone for the factory, which recently celebrated the production of its 750,000th vehicle. Tesla continues to prioritise self-sufficiency at the plant, and the shift toward the 4680 cell format represents a major technical evolution intended to drive down manufacturing costs while boosting vehicle performance.
Local authorities have already cleared the way for certain parts of this expansion, allowing Tesla to proceed with critical infrastructure such as a dedicated freight train station. Despite ongoing discussions regarding local land use, this $250 million commitment reinforces Giga Berlin as the central pillar of Tesla’s long-term European strategy.
