Tesla has officially started testing a new waitlist feature at select Supercharger locations to help manage long lines and improve the charging experience. The pilot program is currently live at five high-traffic sites, primarily in California and New York.

According to a post from the Tesla Charging account, the new feature allows drivers to see their place in line directly through the vehicle’s infotainment screen. The system provides real-time updates, such as the estimated wait time and the number of cars ahead in the queue.

The initial testing phase includes the following locations:

  • Los Gatos, CA: Los Gatos Boulevard
  • Mountain View, CA: El Monte Avenue
  • San Francisco, CA: Lombard Street
  • San Jose, CA: Saratoga Avenue
  • Bronx, NY: East Gun Hill Road

Tesla is encouraging owners to use the Tesla app to provide feedback on the system during this trial period. The goal is to streamline the process at busy hubs where physical lines often spill out into parking lots or public streets.

As Tesla continues to open its Supercharger network to non-Tesla electric vehicles, the demand for stalls has reached an all-time high. In dense urban areas like the San Francisco Bay Area, it is common for drivers to encounter every stall occupied, leading to “first-come, first-served” chaos where it is unclear who arrived first.

Previously, Tesla attempted to manage congestion by implementing Idle Fees for cars left plugged in after charging was complete and by limiting the state of charge to 80% at busy stations. However, these measures did little to organize the physical queue of cars waiting to pull into a spot.

This new digital waitlist represents a shift toward a more organized, virtual line. By integrating the queue into the Tesla software, the company can theoretically prevent users from cutting the line and provide a more predictable travel schedule for long-distance drivers.

If successful, this feature is expected to roll out to hundreds of other congested Supercharger sites globally.
