Tesla has officially hit a major autonomous driving milestone, announcing that its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software has surpassed 10 billion real-world miles. This achievement comes as the company pushes toward Elon Musk’s long-term goal of achieving unsupervised autonomy.
According to data sent by Tesla to FSD testers, the fleet is now adding approximately 28.8 million miles every day. Of the 10.1 billion total miles recorded by May 2026, nearly 3.8 billion were driven on complex city streets.
Tesla claims that vehicles using FSD (Supervised) currently experience seven times fewer collisions than the United States average. The company’s self-driving computer is designed to learn from every mile driven, adapting to new scenarios to improve safety for both drivers and pedestrians.
While the milestone is being celebrated by many enthusiasts, some owners have reported mixed experiences with the latest software, FSD 14.3.2. While not perfect, it remains a significant technical feat, capable of taking owners from parking spot to parking spot hands-free.
The massive data set gathered from these 10 billion miles is being used to train Tesla’s neural networks. The company expects these improvements to lead to a hands-free version of the software later this year.
In January of this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk noted that roughly 10 billion miles of training data would be the threshold needed to achieve safe unsupervised self-driving, citing the “super long tail of complexity” found in real-world driving. We are already seeing glimpses of this future with the expansion of the Robotaxi network.
