Tesla Cybertruck Misses Out on Steam Support, Reveals Code

Tesla hacker known as ‘green’ (@greentheonly on X) disclosed that Tesla’s Cybertruck lacks support for the Steam gaming service, despite initial expectations.

Through a detailed examination of the Cybertruck’s system, ‘green’ shared that the vehicle boasts a large display with a resolution of 2650×1440, surpassing the 2200×1300 resolution found in Tesla’s Model S and Model X. Additionally, the Cybertruck features a rear display with a 1440×900 resolution, matching the S/X models but surpassing their software-limited resolution of 1280×720.

Despite the presence of firmware support for Steam, akin to what’s seen in the current Model S and Model X, Cybertruck owners are currently unable to access the gaming service.

According to ‘green’, the Cybertruck’s onboard computer specifications—comprising 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage—mirror those of the modern Model 3/Y and the original S/X refresh, which fall short of the requirements for Steam.

Notably, Steam’s current requirement of 16GB of RAM means that Cybertruck owners may face the requirement of replacing or upgrading their vehicle’s computer system to gain access to Steam, a process that is not only potentially costly but also mirrors the upgrade path early Tesla Plaid model owners had to undertake.

The hacker also pointed out that the discrete GPU (dGPU) presence in the Cybertruck is unclear, suggesting it might not be equipped with one. Additionally, both displays in the Cybertruck operate at a refresh rate of 60 Hz.

This information casts a shadow on the gaming capabilities of the Cybertruck, indicating that unless Steam’s requirements are adjusted to be less stringent, owners of the futuristic electric truck might have to invest further to enjoy in-car gaming experiences similar to those available in the newest Tesla models.
