Tesla Approved to Launch in Malaysia, Confirms Minister

Tesla has officially been approved to sell its electric vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia, and the company is set to build service centers and Supercharger stations to offer new jobs in the country, as shared by Malaysian Minister of International Trade and Industry @Tengku Zafrul on Tuesday (via @Tslachan).

In a Twitter post, Zafrul said Tesla plans to open a Head Office in the country in addition to the Supercharger stations and service centers, set to create skilled and well-paying jobs.

According to the post, Tesla is the first application of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry’s (MITI’s) battery-electric vehicle (BEV) Global Leaders initiative, with which the company is looking to increase demand for the emerging technology locally.

The news comes as part of Tesla’s continued campaign to expand to new markets, with the automaker recently beginning deliveries in nearby Thailand. Similarly, Tesla opened its first store in the country in Bangkok, along with its first V3 Supercharger.

Tesla has recently been in discussion with fellow nearby country Indonesia, which has been courting the U.S. automaker in hopes that it will build an EV factory in the nation.

Model Y deliveries were launched in Singapore last year after the company’s Model 3 units began in 2021.
