Mexican President to Speak with Tesla’s Elon Musk Today: Officials
Tesla CEO Elon Musk is set to speak with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in a call on Monday, according to two officials in a report from Reuters.
Lopez Obrador also said he would talk to Tesla’s “owner” in the Monday morning call, later confirmed by the Mexican officials to be referring to Musk.
The news comes after a report over the weekend said that multiple states in Mexico are fighting to court Tesla into constructing a Gigafactory, including Veracruz, Nuevo Leon and Michoacan.
On Friday, Lopez Obrador told Tesla that it could be denied building permits in Nuevo Leon if water was scarce in the state. According to Reuters, the comments are the latest in concerns that water supply issues could cause the deal to fall through in Nuevo Leon.
Musk visited Nuevo Leon to meet with Governor Samuel Garcia last October, and has been mulling over investment into the state for a Tesla Gigafactory for months.
In recent weeks, a Mexican minister said Tesla was very close to confirming the country as the site of the next factory location.
Throughout much of last year, onlookers speculated whether Tesla’s next factory might land in Mexico or Canada.
