Tesla is applying to expand its Gigafactory Berlin to include rail transport and a train shuttle service, according to documents seen by German publication Moz.de dated January 13 (via @Berlinergy).

The documents show Tesla’s designs for concrete to support passenger transport, using the current Deutsche Regionaleisenbahn GmbH (DRE) tracks alongside plans to build a new stop in Grünheide leading directly to the factory.

The stop will be called “Tesla Süd,” according to the documents, and it’s expected to be primarily used for employees of Giga Berlin commuting from other parts of Brandenburg. Additionally, it’s set to enter service in Q2 of this year using tracks that are already in place.

“The use of the existing DRE track for freight traffic is still possible and will not be affected by the SPNV shuttle service,” writes Tesla in the document.

The existing track will be expanded by 550 meters (1,804 feet), branching off at the eastern end of the site, and the area has already been prepared with concrete, as of Monday.

The train tracks currently run between the Freiebrink freight traffic center and the Fangschleuse station, with an average of two freight trains per week running to the Freiebrink center.

The news comes after Tesla began the process of expanding Giga Berlin to include a freight station, along with an inbound railway concept, in September.
