Tesla’s Giga Shanghai Sets New Quarterly Record, Despite December Sales Dip

Tesla sold 55,796 vehicles built at its Gigafactory Shanghai in December, marking a 44-percent drop from the company’s deliveries in November, according to data shared on Monday by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) (via CnEVPost).

In November, Tesla delivered 100,291 China-made vehicles, while the automaker also delivered 21.24 percent more vehicles in December 2021, when it sold 70,847 Shanghai-built units.

Tesla’s December deliveries push the company to 227,791 units in the fourth quarter, marking a 27.9-percent jump from its 178,097 China-built vehicles sold in the same period last year. Additionally, Tesla’s Q4 deliveries are up 20.96 percent from its 188,317 in Q3.

The December 2022 figure includes both locally delivered vehicles in China and exports sent overseas from the Shanghai production facility. Tesla builds Model 3 and Y vehicles at Giga Shanghai and exports them to a handful of surrounding markets.

Out of Tesla’s global deliveries, the new data also shows that China-built vehicles represented about 56.21 percent of the automaker’s deliveries overall. This figure is up from 54.77 percent in Q3 and 44.2 percent in Q2.

Tesla sold 710,865 Shanghai-built vehicles in all of 2022 for a 50.26-percent jump from its sales in 2021 (473,078).

Despite the December dip in car sales in China, Tesla’s Giga Shanghai still set a new quarterly record for both domestic and exports. Check out the chart below by Roland Pircher:

The news comes just a month after Tesla’s Model Y dominated the best-selling SUV category in November, landing almost 40,000 units ahead of the second-place BMW X3.

For the latest on Giga Shanghai, check out the drone flyover below by Wu Wa filmed on January 5, 2023, showing the factory resuming operations as usual.

“As I set up my drone to observe, the factory presented a busy scene. I was impressed by the line of haulers waiting to enter the factory outside and the neatly arranged haulers in the factory parking area. I counted about 45 haulers parked on site, the most I’ve seen so far, and it was clear that Tesla has picked up the pace of logistics. And at the road test site for Phase 1 [Model 3], the [Model 3] shuttles around the runway; so does Phase 2 [Model Y].
In addition, morning buses transporting employees shuttled through the plant one after another, and private car parking lots were full of cars, all of which suggests that the epidemic is not preventing the plant from running normally, and the rumors of not resuming work are not valid,” said Wu Wa.
