Tesla Led Car Sales in Norway for the Second Consecutive Year in 2022
Tesla sold more cars than any other automotive brand in Norway in 2022, according to a report from Reuters. This marks the second consecutive year of Tesla’s dominance as the country’s top-selling car brand.
Tesla secured a 12.2% share of the Norwegian market in 2022, selling more vehicles — electric or otherwise — than any other automaker. Volkswagen came in second place, with a market share of 11.6%.
Tesla’s Model Y was Norway’s best-selling vehicle of the year, with Volkswagen’s ID.4 trailing behind in second place. The Model Y also made history in Norway last month by beating a single-year car sales record held by the Volkswagen Beetle since 1969.
Norway, the global leader in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, saw all-electric sales surge to 79.3% of all new cars sold in 2022, per the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV). This means that four in every five new vehicles sold in Norway last year were battery-powered.
In comparison, EVs accounted for 65% of all Norwegian vehicle registrations in 2021. To encourage EV adoption, Norway offers tax exemptions for EV purchases that cost the country $4 billion USD in lost revenue in 2022.
While EVs will remain exempt from most of the taxes imposed on their gas-guzzling rivals, Norway is considering a proposed reinstatement of Value-Added Tax (VAT) for EVs and the implementation of a new weight-based tax on all vehicles.
Experts, however, are concerned the proposed taxation would impact EV sales and hinder Norway’s goal of becoming the first country to ban new gas and diesel car sales by 2025.
“We are concerned that the sales will drop because the government has proposed a new tax based on weight,” said Thor Egil Braadland, a spokesperson for the Norwegian Automobile Federation (NAF).
At the start of 2022, Tesla opened its Supercharging network in Norway to all non-Tesla EVs. Just last week, the company hit a new milestone in Norway as the country registered its 100,000th Tesla.
