Tesla Reportedly Pauses Hiring, Possible Layoffs in Q1: Report
As the U.S. appears to continue heading into a recession, Tesla may be making some serious moves to cut labor and hiring costs at the company.
Tesla has reportedly enacted a hiring freeze and a new round of layoffs may be coming as soon as next quarter, according to a source familiar with the matter who spoke with electrek.
Employees have apparently been warned of the hiring pause, and the company said it’s expecting departments to lay workers off during 2023’s first quarter.
No other details were included in the report, such as how many people will be affected by the layoffs, how long Tesla will be pausing hiring, or whether the shifts will primarily be at certain locations or in certain departments.

The apparent news comes after Tesla paused hiring in June and cut about 10 percent of its salaried staff, though the automaker quickly began hiring again throughout much of the second half of 2022.
Tesla ramped up hiring to around 7,000 jobs in October, even after CEO Elon Musk had expressed having a “super bad feeling” about the direction of the U.S. economy just months earlier.
It also comes as a number of companies have announced plans to pause hiring and implement layoffs amidst the current economic downturn, including Goldman Sachs and Cisco, among others.
