Tesla Model Y Nabs 2nd Best-Selling Vehicle in the UK: November 2022
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) in the United Kingdom, one of the largest and most influential automotive trade associations in the nation, battery electric vehicle registrations were up 35% in November, year-over-year.
When it came to best-selling vehicles, Tesla’s Model Y came in second among both electric and gas vehicles, with 4,229 registrations, trailing the Nissan Qashqai mild hybrid priced from 26,045 GBP ($31,734 USD).
For year-to-date registrations, the Model Y ranks ninth with 24,887 vehicles, after beginning deliveries in the UK in early 2022 (via @Berlinergy):
“Zero emission vehicle uptake continues to grow, with newly registered battery electric vehicles (BEVs) up 35.2% to represent more than one in five new cars (20.6%) – the largest monthly share of BEVs this year,” said the SMMT.
“Conversely, plug-in hybrid (PHEVs) registrations fell by -5.7%, making up 7.1% of the market. As a result, some 39,558 new plug-ins were registered, representing more than one in four (27.7%) new cars joining UK roads in November. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), meanwhile, rose by 66.9% to 11.2% of the market, driven particularly by fleet operators looking for flexibility and emissions reductions,” it added.
Year to date, diesel registrations are down 39.5%, petrol registration are down 11.1%, while mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) diesels are down 28.7%. MHEV petrol cars are up 11.4%, and battery electric vehicles are leading the change up 38%, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are down 12.4%. Hybrid electric vehicles are up 25.7%.
The SMMT says plug-ins account for more than one in four (27.7%) new registrations in November as battery electric vehicles take their largest monthly share of the new car market in 2022.
Tesla has long said the Model Y is on pace to become the best-selling vehicle of any kind, globally. Earlier today, the Model Y was launched in Taiwan.
