For the first time, an electric vehicle has become the best-selling car in Germany, and it’s none other than Tesla’s Model Y compact crossover SUV.

That’s according to data from Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), showing the Model Y led registrations at 9,846 in September 2022, beating out the gasoline-powered Volkswagen Golf at 7,095, reports heise.de (via @SawyerMerritt).

The VW Tiguan was third with 5,887, followed by the gas cars Skoda Octavia, VW T-Roc and then by the electric Fiat 500 with 4,517 registrations. The Opel Cross was in seventh with 4,139 registrations, and Tesla’s Model 3 was in eighth at 3,878 registrations.

The numbers put into a chart by @nextmove_de shows 44% of the top 10 best-selling vehicles were all-electric vehicles.

The crown for Tesla and the Model Y is a major one, considering Gigafactory Berlin has only just started to ramp up production. Moreover, it’s a shift in German consumer behaviour as an American company, Tesla, had its vehicles outsell Germany’s own Volkswagen, which makes all-electric ID.4 and ID.3 vehicles, that were not even in the top ten.

A recent report cites Tesla is said to be ready to deliver Model S and Model X Plaid vehicles in Europe soon. Earlier today, it was reported that a Model S Plaid was spotted being offloaded in China, with the vehicle no longer sporting ultrasonic sensors.
