Tesla China Delivers Nearly 72,000 Cars in October

Tesla delivered 71,704 vehicles built at Giga Shanghai in October, marking a 14-percent drop from the previous month in which the automaker had record deliveries, according to figures from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) released on Thursday (via Reuters).

In September, Tesla delivered 83,135 cars from Giga Shanghai, setting a record for the highest number of deliveries since opening. Despite the drop-off in October, the automaker still saw a year-over-year increase in deliveries during the month.

The news comes after Tesla slashed prices in China by as much as 9 percent, about which many analysts have expressed concern over the automaker’s demand potentially falling.

Tesla followed BYD in October, which shipped 217,518 units in China in October, according to the CPCA.

Additionally, Tesla has closed its flagship showroom in China, which one source described as a means to cut down on costs in what is the company’s second-largest market.

The news also comes as China’s top electric vehicle (EV) brands Nio, Li Auto and Xpeng Motors saw deliveries drop, largely due to combatting continued COVID-19 outbreaks and supply chain issues.

Tesla is also preparing to launch its Model S and X Plaid in the country on Saturday, and has the two vehicles on display at the China International Import Expo.
