Will Tesla Switch to Wider-Angle Blind-Spot Cameras? [VIDEO]

Tesla could be switching to a wide-angle repeater camera, or blind-spot camera, as discussed in a video from Cyber Owners shared late last month (via Not a Tesla App).

The video’s host Mike Hoffman talks about using Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta at blind turns when the driver’s view and the repeater camera’s view are obstructed. In response, drivers have to lean over the steering wheel and creep forward with the car to catch areas the current cameras miss.

Hoffman points out his expectations for both computer improvements and camera improvements that could help the FSD system detect a wider angle near tight and obstructed street corners.

Additionally, Hoffman says he thinks Tesla could already be working on testing a new wide-angle repeater camera, per something he noticed in another video posted by Autopilot Director Ashok Elluswamy.

In the video, Elluswamy shows camera footage that can see much further ahead than current blind-spot offerings — though some speculate that the footage could be from b-pillar cameras between the front and rear doors.

Tesla fixed issues with the repeater cameras for customers for free earlier this year, and many have also suggested different ideas for how the repeater cameras should display the scene on the software side of things.
