Back in January, it was discovered Tesla had fixed an issue with its blind spot cameras to reduce glare using a simple old-fashioned method: tape.

When Tesla’s holiday software update was released in December, a new blind spot camera feature was introduced. The feature would show the side repeater cameras on your vehicle’s display when signalling. But for some Tesla owners, the glare from the side repeater camera turn signals would affect the view at night, causing the feature to be ineffective.

A teardown of the latest side repeater cameras revealed Tesla had fixed the issue with tape to cover up holes that were the cause of the glare. At the time, Tesla was still charging customers to get replacements for $470 installed.

But now it seems Tesla policy has changed for these side repeater cameras, as they are now fixing them free of charge under warranty. That’s according to u/naturebrah on Reddit, noting their most recent Tesla service estimate showed the cost of $0.00 to “replace both side repeater cameras.”

Others in the Reddit thread chimed in they also were able to get the side repeater cameras replaced for free, after previously being asked to pay for the service.

“Got my 2020 [Model 3 Performance] replaced under warranty last month. In no way did I specify that something was wrong with them other than the blinker flashing. They quoted me something similar then it ended up being under warranty repair. Also, I didn’t go in for any other issue but to have them replace the repeaters,” said user ‘sundropdance’.

“Exact same story for my 2020 [Model 3 Performance]. I scheduled a service just for this issue and they gave me a similar estimate so I fully expected to pay. But the day of the service the invoice said warranty repair and there was no charge,” said ‘padolph’.

If you’re suffering from glare at night with the side repeater cameras on your Tesla, it may be worth asking your local service center to replace them, as it may be free of charge like what some others are experiencing.
