Tesla Files to Build New Battery Manufacturing Line at Fremont Factory

Electric vehicle (EV) giant Tesla is looking to add a new production line at its flagship factory, even as the automaker expands its production reach across the world.

Tesla is set to construct an additional battery manufacturing line at its Fremont, California factory on Tuesday, as spotted by Teslarati in a filing with the city.

The filing, signed on Tuesday, would let Tesla add a new line on the second floor of the main assembly building. The project’s value is estimated at $1.5 million as seen in the documents.

“New battery manufacturing equipment line on 2nd floor of main assembly building,” Tesla wrote in the application. “This permit application relates to the module portion of the line.”

The news comes amidst skyrocketing demand for EV batteries, as several automakers begin delving into the zero-emission auto world.

Tesla supplier Panasonic is planning two U.S. EV battery plants, both valued around $4 billion dollars. Fellow Tesla supplier CATL will also build a North American EV battery plant in Mexico in the coming years.

In June, Tesla’s Fremont factory hit a daily production record, just as the new Giga Berlin first reached 1,000 cars built in a week.

While Fremont is the automaker’s first major Gigafactory, Tesla has also established new Gigafactories in Texas, Germany and China in the past few years. CEO Elon Musk also says Tesla may announce its next Gigafactory location by the end of this year.
