Tesla to Add Automatically Adjusting Side Mirrors Feature, Says Elon Musk

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Friday the company will be adding a feature that will automatically configure side mirrors.

Responding to a question from James Stephenson, asking “will Teslas ever be able to automatically adjust the side mirror settings for new drivers?”, based on the 3D position of the driver’s eyes and comparing against the fleet’s internal camera data and side mirror settings, Musk answered with a “yes” and added, “but side mirrors won’t be needed in a self-driving future.”

Musk later followed up to say, “That said, we will add autoconfigure to side mirrors.”

The Tesla CEO also pointed out the side mirrors cause roughly 5% range reduction at highway speeds.

Tesla’s Cybertruck will ship with mirrors to follow auto laws in the U.S., but users will be able to remove them said Musk last October.

Currently, Tesla side mirrors auto tilt, auto fold and auto dim. The folding of mirrors can be set to specific locations

The electric automaker continues to improve vehicle functions through software updates. Tesla’s 2022.24 software update will allow owners to customize the location of the blind spot camera on a Tesla’s display, to show at the top instead of the awkward bottom left position.

As for when Tesla will debut auto configuration for side mirrors, that’s anyone’s guess, as we need to keep in mind “Elon time.”
