Tesla Model Y, Model 3 Lead China’s Top-Selling New Energy Vehicles in March

Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3 were China’s #1 and #2 best-selling new energy vehicles (NEVs) for March, respectively. According to recently released data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), the Model Y sold 39,730 units, while the Model 3 sold 26,024.

The Model Y also topped SUV sales in China for both March and the entirety of Q1 2022, while the Model 3 ranked third in sedan sales during March (via CnEVPost).

Model Y sales in China were up 113.7% from 18,593 units in February, 291.4% year-over-year from 10,151 units in March 2021. The Model Y outsold every other electric SUV in China for the full year 2021, but the all-electric crossover this time topped overall SUV sales in the country.

For March SUV sales in China, the BYD Song placed second at 26,723 units, with the Changan CS75 in third at 22,811 units, and the Haval H6 trailing in fourth at 19,303 units.

Quarterly sales of the Model Y for Q1 2022 were 74,681 units, up 354.8% year-over-year. The BYD Song ranked second with 73,704 units sold in the first quarter, while the Haval H6 came in third with 71,411 units.

The Model 3 had its first strong month of sales in the year, after only 2,988 and 4,607 units in January and February, respectively.

With 26,024 units sold in March, the Model 3 ranked third for sedan sales in the month, behind the SAIC-GM-Wuling Hongguang Mini EV at 41,980 units and the Nissan SYLPHY at 30,240 units.

Tesla sold a whopping 65,814 China-made vehicles in March (65,754 units delivered in China, and 60 units exported) — the electric vehicle (EV) maker’s second-highest for a month after December 2021’s 70,847 cars.

Production at Tesla’s Chinese Gigafactory in Shanghai has been suspended since late last month. The shutdown of Giga Shanghai has now reached 18 days (including another 2-day pause from mid-March), and operations at the factory still remain paused.
