Linn Creek City Council voted unanimously to add an electric vehicle (EV) to the police department’s fleet this week, marking a major milestone for the state of Missouri.

The Linn Creek Police Department is the first police department in Missouri to add a Tesla vehicle to its fleet, according to KOMU 8.

The department added a Tesla Model 3 to the fleet earlier this week, and Police Chief Jeff Christenson says he had done his research prior to making the purchase.

In a statement, Christenson said, “So as I looked into the Teslas, I started looking at, you know, the safety features it had, you know, for our officers, I started looking at the warranty.” Christenson continued, “So it’s got an eight-year. 120,000 mile warranty on the battery alone.”

Christenson also added that most police officers put around 70 miles on their cars per day, adding up to about 12,000 miles per year.

Last month, the police department in Spokane, Washington said the Model Y is “not suitable” as a patrol cruiser, following a wave of other U.S. police departments adding Teslas to their fleets.

The Spokane police department decided to go with Ford instead, though police in Indiana, New York, other parts of Washington and a wide range of other states have added Teslas to their fleets over the past few years — finding them to save money on maintenance and gas.
