Paris Taxi Driver Suing Tesla Following Fatal Accident Last Year

A taxi driver in Paris is taking legal action against Tesla, after an accident in his Model 3 resulted in a fatality back in December, according to Reuters.

The taxi was off-duty and collided with metal posts, a handful of rental bicycles and a recycling bin before crashing into pedestrians and a van, then finally stopping, according to witnesses.

The driver, who remains anonymous, told police that the vehicle had accelerated on its own, saying that the brakes were unable to be activated.

The driver filed a legal complaint against Tesla in France, just a few days after being told by the French government that there didn’t seem to be any indications of a technical fault.

Through lawyer Sarah Saldmann, the driver filed a criminal complaint with prosecutors in Versailles, claiming that the automaker “put the lives of others in danger”.

Along with one pedestrian death, three others were seriously hurt and 17 others were also injured.

At the present time, the driver is being investigated for manslaughter but has not been charged, also testing negative in an alcohol content test after the accident.

The electric automaker is able to gain vehicle operationalstatistics from its fleet and has been able to use this information to challenge safety claims from drivers.

Tesla is also undergoing a U.S. investigation over phantom braking issues, as conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
