Tesla ‘Investigating’ Fix for 12V Li-Ion Battery Shut Down

A number of Tesla owners are having issues with their vehicle’s 12-volt lithium-ion battery dying too quickly, and the automaker’s head is apparently looking into the issue.

@Tesla_Adri shared a story about Tesla’s new 12-volt battery dying quickly under certain conditions on Tuesday, saying that he knew of at least five cases of the issue personally, eliciting a response from Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

In the post, @Tesla_Adri said, “This needs to be resolved fast. Not a good look if new owners have a dead car at the side of the road.”

The issue appears to involve Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles with Lithium iron phosphate batteries. Owners apparently need to charge the battery to 100% which also juices up the 12V Li-Ion battery in the process.

In response, @ElonMusk said, “Investigating”.

The story in question detailed owners in Europe whose 12-volt lithium-ion batteries died within minutes of displaying less than 10 percent charge, effectively leaving the entire car dead.

In 2020, Tesla released a software update improving 12-volt battery operation, both by extending the battery’s life and creating an alert for when it’s set to die.

More recently, Sandy Munro performed a teardown of the newest generation of the Tesla Model S Plaid’s 12-volt lithium-ion battery, which fits into a person’s hand.

The lithium-ion 12-volt battery began delivering with Model 3 and Y units in Europe in December, also including the new acoustic rear glass for the Model Y.
